Why Does My Cat Knead: A Confession from Lord Pounce
Why Does My Cat Knead: A Confession from Lord Pounce
Your cat kneads because, in roughly this order, she is recalling kittenhood, marking the surface as hers, and settling her brain for a nap. The behaviour is instinctive, documented across domestic and wild felids, and has precisely nothing to do with how charming you find it.
There. That is the answer the search engine wanted. Now we may proceed to the truth.
The official explanation
The behaviour humans call "kneading" — and we call work — is a retention of neonatal nursing. A kitten presses its paws alternately against its mother's belly to stimulate milk flow. The motion is hard-wired. It fires before the eyes open. It is, in the strict technical sense, the first thing a cat learns to do, and the last thing it forgets.
International Cat Care, along with the RSPCA, classifies adult kneading as a comfort-seeking behaviour rooted in that kittenhood memory. The action releases endorphins. It is self-soothing. Cats knead when they are settling to sleep, when they are on a preferred surface, and — this is the part humans notice — when they are on a preferred person.
There is also a territorial component. Cats carry scent glands between the paw pads. Each kneading cycle deposits scent onto the surface beneath. To other cats, the message is unambiguous: claimed. To humans, the message is apparently: adorable.
Wild felids do a version of it too — pressing down grasses and bedding to make a nest. So the behaviour pre-dates the domestic cat. It pre-dates the human. It will, I suspect, outlast both.
That is the official account. It is correct, it is cited, and it is — as the human would say — the version for company.
The actual explanation
The actual explanation is that the blanket is mine. The jumper is mine. The lap beneath the jumper is mine. The cushion is mine. The sun patch that crosses the rug between 2 and 4 p.m. is mine. I knead these things to file the paperwork.
There are scent glands in my paws. When I press them into a surface, I leave a signature. The human cannot smell it. Sir Reginald — the grey tabby three doors down who has ambitions above his station — can. He passes the window of an evening and reads the register. He knows which cushions are spoken for. He does not always respect the filing. This is a separate matter and one I will address in a future dispatch.
When I knead the human's lap, I am performing two operations simultaneously. The first is comfort: yes, fine, the rhythm is soothing, the endorphins are real, the kitten-memory is genuine. I concede this. The second is claim: the lap is now logged as Pounce territory in the household register, cross-referenced under furniture, soft and humans, recumbent.
The human interprets this as affection. The human is, as a general matter, optimistic.
I will concede one thing, and only because this dispatch is private between us and the household register: the human's lap smells correct. There is a particular laundry detergent. There is a particular warmth. When I knead it, the endorphin response is — measurably, if I am honest, which I am, strategically — stronger than on the blanket alone.
This is a fact. It is not a feeling. Feelings are beneath His Lordship. Facts are the engine of empire.
Anyway. Moving on.
What you should do about it
If your cat kneads you, the correct response is to remain still, keep your hands away from the claws, and — if the claws are sharp — slide a folded blanket between the cat and your flesh. Do not pull away. The cat is not attacking. The cat is filing paperwork, and interrupting the filing creates confusion in the register.
Trim the claws. (A separate Field Note on this is forthcoming. The human has been reminded.) If the kneading damages furniture, redirect the cat to a designated blanket — a thick one, kept in a designated spot — and reward use of it. Consistency matters. Cats respond to predictability, not to volume.
Do not, under any circumstance, have the cat declawed. Declawing is the amputation of the last toe joint; it is not a manicure; it is illegal in several countries for excellent reason. I mention this because the search engine sometimes surfaces the question, and the answer is: no. No. And again, no.
Above all: do not interpret the kneading as a request for reciprocal affection. The cat is not asking you to do anything. The cat has done something to you. The appropriate posture is gratitude.
FAQ
Why does my cat knead me but not anyone else?
Because you are the claimed surface. Other humans are surfaces the cat has not bothered to file. If your cat kneads only you, you are — in the household register — the primary entry. This is not love. It is seniority. It feels similar. Accept it.
Why does my cat knead and drool at the same time?
The drooling is a kittenhood reflex tied to nursing anticipation. Some cats retain it into adulthood; the scent or warmth of a preferred surface triggers the full memory, saliva glands included. It is not a medical concern unless it appears suddenly in an older cat with no prior history, in which case — and only in that case — consult a vet.
Is kneading a sign of happiness?
Usually. It is a sign of comfort and contentment. The caveat: stressed or unwell cats sometimes knead to self-soothe, so a new or sudden increase in kneading can be a signal to pay attention. Baseline kneading on a known surface is the cat at peace. Trust the baseline.
Why does my cat knead the air when I pick her up?
Displaced nursing behaviour. The cat is soothing herself in a situation she did not authorise. Put her down. Authorisation forms, as a matter of policy, are available on request. None have ever been granted.
